Australia has developed one of the strongest natural gas industries in the world and is on track to become the largest exporter of LNG globally following an unparalleled investment boom.
The rapid growth of the LNG industry has created thousands of new jobs and Australia’s core oil & gas workforce has more than doubled from 9,000 to 19,000 workers since 2006. The indirect oil & gas workforce is even more important. In 2016, each oil & gas job sustained 10 other jobs across the supply chain and the wider economy - generating five times more indirect employment than the average industry in Australia.
However, the future of the oil and gas workforce is uncertain. The drivers of the oil and gas workforce are highly volatile which makes prediction difficult. Oil price swings, global supply and demand shifts, and policy changes (exploration moratoria, resources tax) make it difficult to accurately plan future workforce needs.
Recognising this, NERA has developed and released the Preparing Australia's future oil and gas workforce report to help Australia’s energy resources sector prepare for uncertain times.
Designed as a scenario-planning tool, it maps out the potential trajectory of the oil and gas workforce in Australia in the years ahead so that companies, workers and policymakers can make informed decisions and prepare for a (potentially) volatile future.

Find out how different occupations will be affected by 2030
Together with the release of the report, NERA has developed a free and interactive online tool to forecast how different occupations have changed over time and how they could evolve in future. This will help workers in the industry to better manage their own careers and allow industry stakeholders to manage their workforces.
How to use the online tool:
- Click on the field below to open the list of oil and gas occupations.
- Scroll down to find your preferred occupation. Click on it to confirm and display estimated workforce by 2030.
- Continue to select up to 5 different occupations.
- To delete an occupation, simply click the blue x to remove it from the total estimate.
- To reset, simply close all occupations and select new skills from the list again.
