Program Objectives

The overarching objective of the Growth Centres program is to improve the productivity and competitiveness of each of the strategic priority sectors identified by the Australian Government.

The program takes a national sector approach to structural reform and addresses barriers to productivity, competitiveness and innovative capacity at the sector level where economic growth can be maximised. The program achieves this objective through:

  • Identifying regulations that are unnecessary or over-burdensome for the six sectors and impede their ability to grow, and suggesting possible reforms;
  • Improving engagement between research and industry, and within industry, to achieve stronger coordination and collaboration of research and stronger commercialisation outcomes in the six sectors;
  • Improving the capability of the key sectors to engage with international markets and access global supply chains; and
  • Improving the management and workforce skills of the six sectors.

Industry Growth Centres set the long-term strategy for their sector through a Sector Competitiveness Plan.
